Billion Dollar FenceThe hottest topic on the table these days is not the war in Iraq but illegal immigration.Presently it's split down the middle between the bleeding heart liberals who want to embrace these invaders with open arms and have open borders, and the ultra right-wingers who want to round them all up and send them home.We all know in the recesses of our minds that neither of these ideas is the proper or best solution.A few facts against the illegal immigrants that seem to have emerged are:They are in our country without permission, meaning they broke our laws to get here. That's why they are called illegal immigrants. They do not pay taxes because they do not have legal permission to work in this country and their employers cannot deduct taxes from a worker they have not and cannot report to the Social Security Administration. They attend our schools, partake of public services, accept welfare and obtain medical assistance, all at the expense of the legal citizen taxpayers. They do take away jobs that many unemployed Americans could be doing by virtue of the fact that without their presence, employers would have to pay at least the minimum wage to tax paying Americans thus they are keeping payroll levels from increasing. They are also taking away positions that millions of other immigrants around the world are hoping for, but they are the ones who are trying the route through legal immigration.True, for the most part they are hard workers, they are very industrious, possess admirable family and moral values, and they are for the most part basically law abiding, and there are many serving in our Armed Forces in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan! But, they are guilty because they are here illegally, just as any one of us would be an illegal immigrant if we entered Mexico or Panama or France or any other sovereign country without proper documentation. And, not being a citizen of that nation we would not have the right to demand jobs, schooling, medical care or anything else. And, we definitely would not get any of them either! However, they are not the only guilty party.Even more guilt can and should be placed on the shoulders of money grubbing employers and our government representatives who have failed miserably to uphold American law.The dirtiest deed is done by American employers who pay these poor work starved people wages far below our government's legal minimum wage and pocket huge gains from their hard work. The next dirtiest deed is for our government to look in the other direction while this is being done, and pretend it is not happening. If (by our laws) these employers were forced by our government to pay Americans a just wage for the type of work required, there would be no long skulking lines of illegal immigrants, although, there would still be lots of eager immigrants praying to enter our country legally. If hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants can join hands and protest in major cities throughout America, demanding rights they are not legally entitled to, why on earth didn't they stay in their own country and try to make their own native land a better place to work and live? If they do not live under a democratic system of government, it's up to them to change it not us, we already fought for and got what we wanted!Unfortunately, because so many third-world countries are ruled by the minority rich who control the military and police, it would be almost suicidal for them to protest. And, our rich support their rich! But, it's not just their native governments that are keeping them in abject poverty. The powerful and filthy rich of America contribute immensely to their downtrodden social status. Why do you think so many American jobs have gone overseas to places like Mexico, India, China, Central & South America and other underdeveloped countries? We both know the answer - money. American employers pay a pittance overseas for hard work that our government would not let them get away with in our country. While their bank accounts burst at the seams, they are contributing to, bolstering and encouraging our illegal immigration dilemma. We must realize and accept the fact that the undocumented aliens presently in our country are not going home. The United States does not have the money or resources to deport 11 million illegal immigrants, nor do Americans have the cruelty to rip families apart and send them packing. Many may be here illegally but they have had children who were born in this country and by our own laws they are American citizens. Bad law, but that's another story. Also, there may be 11 million here, but many have families back in the old country. So, we're talking not 11 million, but more like 30 million! It doesn't take a blooming genius to realize that this is a government problem that can easily be solved if our representatives have the guts to do it.The first thing they must do is - either enforce our laws or get rid of them! If American employers hire illegal immigrants and pay them less than the legal minimum wage, fine them and hit them where it hurts - in their pocketbooks. A stiff fine, not a slap on the wrist! When the well paying farm and service jobs dry up because legal Americans have them, there will be no need for illegal immigrants to come to our country. If American companies are taking American jobs and sending them overseas, fine them (through tariffs) so that it will not be so cheap for them to relocate to countries that exploit their workers. If people had decent paying jobs in their own country, they would think twice about moving to a foreign land with a foreign language and foreign customs. Finally, there's no need to build a multi billion dollar fence on our borders, which we all know will not work.If illegal immigrants are caught in our country, advise the country from which they came that unless they take them back, at an agreed upon expense, we will no longer conduct business, import products or have diplomatic relations with that country. No more freebies at America's expense. (Call it Sarge's Law). Loss of the almighty American dollar and American economic support may make them think twice about dumping their unwanted refugees and criminals on our shores. For those illegal immigrants already here, if they are employed, paying taxes, want to become citizens by learning English and adapting to our culture and our way of life, and have no criminal record, grant them visas, and, make sure their employers are paying them according to our laws. For all others who fail to meet this test or those who come here illegally after a certain cutoff date, Sarge's Law applies. What's so difficult with that scenario? The difficulty is that our politicians do not have the intestinal fortitude to apply Sarge's Law because big business runs the government, not them!Believe it or not!
